Now I know officially people are saying Spring is here, but the Northwest is still being tormented by constant pouring rain and cold temperatures. I hope the saying “April showers bring May flowers” does not apply this year and we get to see some “April Sunshine!” Even with all the rain my activities as Miss NPRA continue to be exciting and fun filled. The month of March was full of great events and we officially kicked off the rodeo season!
I started off by traveling to Grand Ronde, Oregon to attend the Miss Rodeo Oregon Coronation for my dear friend Mackenzie Carr. The Spirit Mountain Casino was an exciting location for the coronation and provided a beautiful room for Mackenzie’s special night. That night we said thank you to Miss Rodeo Oregon 2010 Ashley Ziegler for a job well done and congratulations for placing in the top 10 at Miss Rodeo America. We enjoyed seeing some pictures of Ashley’s year and listening to the emcee for the night, Scott Allen. It was a pleasure to help out with Mackenzie’s live auction and carry around some of the great items. I was able to meet some new faces and say hello to some old friends, everyone came out to support Mackenzie that night. Even my Dad was involved in the event as he helped escort the visiting royalty to the front of the room to be introduced, thank you Dad for always being there when we need you. Mackenzie, I know you will have a fun filled year and I look forward to seeing you during my travels. a>
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 120px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZCsifRMmYqg/TZqXkN62rXI/AAAAAAAAAjA/PPVG3RvPrgs/s200/MRO%2BAuction.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591948535801490802" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 120px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HIeLlLv4Z2Y/TZqXY0vDXMI/AAAAAAAAAi4/vA0EGHTdaAo/s200/MRO%2Bgroup.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591948340062543042" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UjDASCcPzwk/TZqXQiA99iI/AAAAAAAAAiw/jt7UlxsR_j0/s200/MRO%2Bmack%2Band%2Bshay.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591948197598459426" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hPMfH5w9NC8/TZqXJxyq-eI/AAAAAAAAAio/jZ1nhHcOLaQ/s200/MRO%2Bshay%2Band%2Bdad.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591948081574377954" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1tEsPEu7ZyY/TZqW_wkoJSI/AAAAAAAAAig/p-tt9As4eRs/s200/Thunder%2BMt%2BGroup.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591947909448344866" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YQJ_xfof83k/TZqW0RFe2uI/AAAAAAAAAiY/-HiOIoySu1o/s200/vancouver%2Bcourt%2Band%2Bshay.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591947712017652450" />
After a wonderful stay in Grand Ronde, the next weekend I put on some pink and made the short trip down I-5 to attend to the “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” Vancouver Rodeo Queen Coronation. The night was entertaining with a “Mr. Vancouver Rodeo Pageant.” Incoming Queen Courtney and I had a great time hosting the event. We later heard some Cowboy Poetry from Don Hanley, his poems always seem to put a smile on my face! Great job Don! I was honored to be asked to crown Courtney that night and I couldn’t have placed that crown on a more qualified, wonderful, and special young lady. Courtney, you will do an amazing job this year. The Vancouver Rodeo is one of the best in the NPRA and you will have a wonderful time representing it!
For the next event I didn’t have to travel far. The Thunder Mountain Pro Rodeo Fundraiser and Queen Coronation was in Longview, Washington. A short trip over the Lewis and Clark Bridge brought me right to the coronation of the 2011 Miss Thunder Mountain Pro Rodeo, Erin Overbay. I have had the pleasure of knowing Erin for a while and I enjoyed helping her celebrate her new title that evening with great food and friends. She also had a “Mr.” contest and Vancouver Queen Courtney and I had a great time helping our “Mr. Thunder Mountain Pro Rodeo” contestant earn as much money as he could from the crowd. Congratulations Erin, I know we will have another great year together as Rodeo Royalty. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9sF46ZEbs7g/TZqYF8HPpSI/AAAAAAAAAjY/r4-sbVCTJrI/s200/Elma%2Bautographs.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591949115137172770" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wpvG9Vj72Jw/TZqX69wsMSI/AAAAAAAAAjQ/jezXMUjRHGI/s200/Elma%2Bgrand%2Bentry.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591948926600884514" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 120px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dzN9_ptzO4Q/TZqXwKBVc4I/AAAAAAAAAjI/5pmCx_WAO_0/s200/Elma%2Bwarm%2Bup%2B2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591948740913361794" />
The very next day it was rodeo time! My trailer was loaded up for the first rodeo of the season and I was accompanied by my father, 2011 Columbia County Queen Emily Simpson, 2011 Miss Rodeo Oregon Mackenzie Carr, and their mothers Julie and Barb. After a quick drive to Elma, Washington we tacked up our horses (both Emily and I ride horses named “Missy”, which is funny) and even though it was raining and muddy we still were excited. Luckily, this rodeo is indoors and it even had heat so the pouring down rain and cold chill didn’t get us down! It was great to see a packed house and tons of young kids in the stands for the last performance. I had a great time doing my first official grand entry, pushing cows, helping with the kid’s stick horse races, and signing autographs. I think I can speak for many of us when I say after the first rodeo we now have RODEO FEVER! I am looking forward to a great rodeo season and I hope to see many of you during my travels!

February 2011

Greetings! As I continue my adventures as 2011 Miss NPRA, I continue to stay busy and have the pleasure of meeting some wonderful people! I kicked off the month of February by attending the Clark County Fair Court Coronation. I traveled to the Clark County Event Center and had a wonderful night with great food, entertaining events, and even line dancing with the new court and visiting royalty in front of the crowd. I look forward to seeing Princess Larissa Marini, Princess Kaycee Cook, and Queen Alicia Fox as I travel the northwest. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 133px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pC5GsiNGq78/TXWcMthuPEI/AAAAAAAAAho/Xwfg1TsQr7U/s200/feb%2B2011%2B002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581539055388998722" />
The next weekend I traveled to Molalla Oregon for their 2011 Cowboy Ball and announcement/coronation of their 2011 Miss Molalla Buckaroo. I have had such a good time getting to know all the Miss Molalla Buckaroo contestants as I traveled earlier this year. They all did such a great job and should be proud of their hard work. Congratulations to 2011 Miss Molalla Buckaroo Jeanine Johnson. The night was not only filled with the excitement for the new queen but also featured an outstanding silent and live auction. I had such a hard time resisting the two cute little puppies and miniature goat that were auctioned off that night, they were so cute! I had the pleasure of helping with the dessert auction and getting to know other visiting royalty as well that night. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 133px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-adEM1jRTXPA/TXWcX1HWUoI/AAAAAAAAAhw/SmSB-UCruwA/s200/feb%2B2011%2B004.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581539246404424322" />
One of the biggest nights for me in February was my own coronation. The day we had been planning for months was finally here and on February 26th I officially received the crown. I am so thankful the weather let up enough for people to come out safely. The night was full of excitement and we had a wonderful turnout. Besides a live and silent auction the crowd was entertained by a dessert dash and the Mr. NPRA contest. Thank you to everyone who contributed desserts for the dash, I couldn’t believe all the wonderful goodies that were up for grabs! They all looked so delicious! The live and silent auctions wouldn’t have been such a success without the donations and contributions of so many of you, thank you to everyone who donated an item. Also, thank you to the boys who competed for the Mr. NPRA title, you all made us laugh and all deserved to be winners! I owe my brother, Coleton, for rounding up his best buddies and bringing them to compete in the contest! They put on a great show for us all. Congratulations to Max for winning the title of 2011 Mr. NPRA! I know you will wear the buckle proudly Max! It was also wonderful to see all the visiting royalty that night. We have a great bunch of ladies this year representing the sport of rodeo and I am honored to get to spend the year with them. Thank you ladies for making the trip to St. Helens for my coronation, it means a lot to me. I must thank “The Village Inn” in St Helens Oregon for making this night possible. I couldn’t have had such a wonderful event without their help and support. They opened up their rooms and set up a wonderful atmosphere and prepared a delicious meal! They truly are a wonderful establishment and I look forward to going there again in the future.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VGZWN9EmgtQ/TXWciJr8B2I/AAAAAAAAAh4/LGVMC7nUnCA/s200/feb%2B2011%2B051.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581539423725291362" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HxaAqM11Ukg/TXWcvDZWY1I/AAAAAAAAAiA/lBAyJPgHqow/s200/feb%2B2011%2B052.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581539645375013714" />
My night ended with a wonderful surprise presented to me by my coordinator, Jean McPherson and NPRA President, David Nieman, a custom made trophy saddle made by Outlaw Saddles! I look forward to riding in it proudly this year! Between now and next time, I hope you enjoy St. Patrick’s Day (be sure to rock some green that day!) and I hope to see you in Elma Washington as we kick off the rodeo season!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pZM1UKIksVo/TXWdTm6tVcI/AAAAAAAAAiI/iLDZewPQTwk/s200/NPRA_w_saddle_8026.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581540273385461186" />

2011 Miss NPRA
Shalaina Joiner

January 2011

Hello everyone, I hope the beginning of your year has been as great and busy as mine. January brought the beginning of many events and activities for me. I was honored to have been invited to the 2011 Miss Eugene Pro Rodeo Queen Coronation by the outgoing queen Kyra Turner. Of course I wouldn’t have missed it for anything, so I traveled to Eugene Oregon on Jan 13th. Luckily my grandparents live in Eugene and after the drive down there they let me get ready at their house. Thank you Grandma and Grandpa Joiner for letting me stop by. That night I attended the coronation for Miss Eugene Pro Rodeo Jessica Shafer. Everyone was so nice and we had a great time. I enjoyed watching Kyra’s slide show of her year and getting to know Jessica. I also had the pleasure of meeting 2011 Cottage Grove Rodeo Queen Jenny Conrad.<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FJ4VtC-7BBs/TUeBgSoWEoI/AAAAAAAAAhc/wlYAM4-vF7c/s200/blog%2B1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5568561856023761538" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_FJ4VtC-7BBs/TUeBbxy2dtI/AAAAAAAAAhU/1mnbtXRFP68/s200/blog%2B2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5568561778489980626" />
Just a few days later I traveled to St. Paul Oregon to attend the coronation for 2011 Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon Kieran Hull. It was great to see Ariel Overstreet, 2010 Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon, and see her great year and experiences in her scrapbooks and slide show. I enjoyed meeting Kiernan, other 2011 royalty, and seeing Ashley Ziegler who was the emcee for the night along with 2011 St. Paul Rodeo Queen Ashley Fultz. We had a great time helping out during the live auction and helping Kiernan celebrate as she begins her year.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_FJ4VtC-7BBs/TUeBRSRst2I/AAAAAAAAAhM/ybROTZr_Ldk/s200/blog%2B3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5568561598230738786" />
The next weekend I attended the Columbia County Fair and Rodeo Court Coronation and the Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon Coronation in St. Helens Oregon. As a past Columbia County Rodeo Princess, it was great to see the girls and support a rodeo that I have grown up with. Queen Emily, Princess Kelsey, Princess Emily, and JMRO Haley Jones all looked beautiful in their outfits. In recent years there has been a “Mr. Columbia County” contest and this year was no different. Miss Rodeo Oregon Mackenzie Carr and I had a great time hosting the contest. Thank you to all the guys who participated, including my father Troy, you were all great and helped raised money for the girls. Also, thank you to 2007 Columbia County Rodeo Queen and 2008 Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon, Ashley Ekstrom, for being the emcee that night, you did an amazing job! It was a bitter sweet night as we celebrated with the 2011 Columbia County Rodeo Court and JMRO as we also said farewell to the courts coordinator Jean McPherson who, after almost a decade of helping the rodeo royalty in Columbia County, has stepped down. Jean has touched the lives of many girls and families in the area and has helped some of the most successful rodeo queens achieve their dreams and goals. It was very touching to hear people talk about how much Jean means to them and wish her well. Jean will continue to be involved with rodeo through the Miss Rodeo Oregon Pageant Inc, as the coordinator for Miss NPRA, and as a member of the Miss Rodeo America Advisory Board.<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 120px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FJ4VtC-7BBs/TUeBKeLiPMI/AAAAAAAAAhE/avTIRpwjVXg/s200/blog%2B4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5568561481167027394" />
After a week, I traveled to Corvallis Oregon to attend the 2011 Benton County Fair and Rodeo Queen Coronation. Columbia County Princess Emily and I enjoyed the drive down and stopped by a local Starbucks to recharge and get some much needed caffeine before heading to the Benton County Fairgrounds….behind every great rodeo queen is a very strong cup of coffee!!! It was great to see 2010 Miss NPRA Nichole Schrock, who was also 2007 Benton County Fair and Rodeo Queen, and her mother Kristi. I enjoyed helping with the dessert and live auction and meeting 2011 Benton County Queen Clara Crocker and visiting royalty Philomath Frolic Queen Shauna Foster. Attending so many coronations means you get many chances to eat great food and I had the pleasure of trying lamb for the first time at Clara’s coronation. It was so delicious!! I can’t believe I’ve gone this long without trying it!<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 120px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FJ4VtC-7BBs/TUeBFDW_OoI/AAAAAAAAAg8/fFSKpfrDkAM/s200/blog%2B5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5568561388067961474" />
As I head into another month, I hope to see many of you during my travels. My coronation is just around the corner and I hope to see you there! My name is Shalaina Joiner and I am honored to be your 2011 Miss Northwest Professional Rodeo Association. I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable time ringing in the new year and holiday season. I am the proud daughter of Troy and Karen Joiner and KaCee Joiner. I was born in Bangor, Maine and I have lived in Clatskanie, Oregon for the last 20 years. In those 20 years I have enjoyed rodeo and horses in many ways such as running barrels and poles in the Northwest Pee Wee Rodeo Association (now known as the Northwest Youth Rodeo Association), team penning, horse camping, trail riding, showing, gaming, and 4-H. My family and I enjoy spending time with our horses on our ranch and enjoying the great outdoors. I have had the pleasure of being involved with the NPRA in the past by representing two great NPRA rodeos. In 2007 I represented the Columbia County Fair and Rodeo as one of their rodeo princesses and in 2008 I promoted the Tillamook County Rodeo as their Queen.

I am excited to get this year underway. My duties as 2011 Miss NPRA officially started as of January 1rst, but since winning the title in September I’ve been busy and working hard. I hit the ground running getting prepared for this upcoming year and I’ve spent the last 3 months getting sponsors, attending events, and planning my coronation. I have already had many great experiences and fun times as the 2011 Miss NPRA.

In November I traveled to eastern Oregon and attended my first Columbia River Circuit Finals. Thank you to my coordinator, Jean Mcpherson, for allowing me to stay at her house for the weekend. I had a great time at the finals hanging out with my dear friend and 2011 Miss Rodeo Oregon, Mackenzie Carr. I also had the pleasure of spending time with the members of the Miss Rodeo Oregon Pageant at their monthly meeting, thank you to the members for allowing me to sit in on their meeting as a guest.

After watching two great performances at the Finals we made the very short drive to a nearby hotel to support and wish 2010 Miss Rodeo Oregon Ashley Ziegler the best of luck at her Miss Rodeo Oregon Good Luck Party. We had the opportunity to hear Ashley’s speech, see her wardrobe for the pageant, and hear stories about her year. Congratulations to Ashley on making the Top 10 at the Miss Rodeo America Pageant. We are all so proud of you!
The next weekend I drove to Tillamook, Oregon to attend the coronation of the 2011 Tillamook Rodeo Queen Callie Prince. It was a wonderful event with great food, good friends, and excitement for Callie’s year. I enjoyed helping with the live auction and the festivities. Thank you to Callie and the Tillamook Rodeo board members for making me feel at home, it was great to see everyone. January brings the start of many more events and great times.

Speaking of events, I would like to invite everyone to my coronation on February 26th 2011 at The Village Inn Banquet Room in St Helens, Oregon. Doors open at 6pm and come and enjoy an evening of western elegance, good food, music, and live and silent auctions. I hope to see you all there. I look forward to promoting the NPRA and seeing you all on the rodeo road.

Happy Trails,
2011 Miss NRPA
Shalaina Joiner

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 119px; height: 160px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FJ4VtC-7BBs/TSM-8JprynI/AAAAAAAAAg0/MX0tcLtgbJ0/s200/Finals%2B3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558355568209152626" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_FJ4VtC-7BBs/TSM-4AbpUoI/AAAAAAAAAgs/-7kCQAj2zlY/s200/Finals%2B4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558355497014874754" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FJ4VtC-7BBs/TSM-ypOV70I/AAAAAAAAAgk/YV8RlQeI6eo/s200/Dave%2Bwith%2Bcontestants.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558355404885716802" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 106px; height: 160px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_FJ4VtC-7BBs/TSM-oc3zbaI/AAAAAAAAAgU/n6QEUEIAyO8/s200/Finals%2B6.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558355229771263394" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 133px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_FJ4VtC-7BBs/TSM-tlNn0KI/AAAAAAAAAgc/0XNMJrg1Gk8/s200/Randy%2B%2526%2Bgirls.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558355317909606562" />
